BWK's SLICK 2xW POR
Many of the performing Bolio dogs in Philippines can be traced back to the Patrick-bred Arce’s LINEAR POR. While this awesome stud off Patrick’s RICK RUDE 1xW and Patrick’s HEIDI F became famous for his litters with Arce’s(McCool’s) VANNA II POR, his being bred to Arce’s (Zoeller’s) WINKY left an indelible mark to many of today’s fast lane bull dogs. This was the litter from which CH. STD’s ROCKET and CH. DSK's CUJO came from, along with his other (if not more) famous brother BWK’s SLICK 2xw POR. Dogmen of today’s game know SLICK as the sire of the famous GR.CH. Loki’s Den LOKI and CH.BWK’s JEMAAH 3xW, 1xL. But SLICK in his own right is not just that, but is also one hell of an athlete himself who won against two of the best champions in his time.
Bred by JA, this dog found his way to the backyard of another breeder called Jomil. It was there where Doc J saw the laid back red male with a black mask called SLICK and it caught his fancy. Though Jomil offered Doc J another fine looking bull dog, Doc J put his foot down and told Jomil to just call him up when he had decided to sell SLICK.
This decision only came after Doc J lost with his dog called Kim to CH. Underdog’s DENG. With a friend’s help, he was able to acquire the unschooled four-year old male for twenty-eight thousand pesos. It was a gamble, Doc J knew. But it was a gamble he was willing to take.
SLICK was one of those dogs who grew up in a cage and was not used to being let out of the yard. To overcome this demeanor Doc J patiently walked his dog everyday until SLICK slowly developed his confidence. Once SLICK became comfortable with exposure, Doc J decided that there was no time like the present to see what his dog was made of: he scheduled SLICK to be rolled against a dog from Deep South Kennels called MAYHEM.
At the first onset, it seemed as if MAYHEM had pinned SLICK down and was about to put him away for good. Kit Cujo, stepped in to break the fight minutes later, fearing that SLICK took the worst of it. Everyone there was in for a surprise when they saw how badly damaged MAYHEM’s armpit was though SLICK had been under him all the time. Here was one dog that fought better on his back.
Sometime later, SLICK was again rolled with Deep South Kennel’s SERBESA 1xW. SLICK took a beating from the son Arce’s JD POR, but he also retaliated with almost equal damage and refused to stand the line in the corner.
For his gametest, SLICK was pitted against SERBESA’s famous black brother Mike B’s BIG TIME 2xW, 1xGL POR. Upon release, BIG TIME took control and dominated SLICK. He would not let up with the beating, but SLICK was eventually able to ride it all off and later come out on top.
Doc J then decided it was time for SLICK’s pit debut. This time, he made sure we won’t make any mistakes with the conditioning, thus, thru go-betweens, he sought the help of Jack GNB. Jack would only agree to condition SLICK under two conditions: the first was that the conditioning would be done her way and absolutely no one was to meddle and the second was that SLICK would fight CH. Underdog’s DEN DEN. Doc J was only too happy to oblige.
Doc J and Jack got DT’s nod for a match between the two dogs. However, a few days later, DT called Doc J and told him the fight would not materialize because he had chosen to first go against a dog that would later make it to grand champion: STD’s JAMUGA. However, DT promised Doc J and Jack that they would still push through with the SLICK-DEN DEN match, after JAMUGA, win or lose.
After the JAMUGA fight, DT told Doc J and Jack that their fight was still to push through but asked that DEN DEN be allowed to rest for a month first. Doc J and Jack had no other choice but to wait.
A month later, the match was made official and Jack went to work with SLICK. Jack found it a breeze in conditioning SLICK as the dog worked tirelessly like a machine on the catmill even when his foot pads bled from overwork. It seemed as if SLICK conditioned himself because he did not require a bait to work on the mill. According to Doc J, it seemed as if SLICK was aware that he was being groomed for a fight with a champion; taking as much rest as possible on rest days and working hard during training sessions.
On the match day, SLICK tipped the scales at the contracted weight of 37.5 lbs and it was war the moment the two gladiators clashed in the pit. DEN DEN looked to be ahead on the initial onset, coming in strong and domineering. SLICK held and let loose a series of mean shakes when DEN DEN paused for a breather, then he took the fight to the ground, from then on it was SLICK all the way. Three scratches each later and DEN DEN refused to budge from his corner. The BIG RED dog even bit DT in defiance to his handler’s urgings. SLICK was a one time winner in a little over half an hour.
SLICK’s second match came when Southernmen called Doc J and SLICK out with another champion off the famous seven-time winner GR.CH. Southernmen’s Fox ROM: CH Southernmen’s CHIBOG. CHIBOG had won his third from GR.CH. Nasty Kennel’s SATUR on the PDC 2002 Conevntion, which was attended by some of the world famous dogmen- including Scottie Nielson.
It was a humid night in July 2003. The pit was erected near a pig sty and it made the environs no less friendly. The Spectators came in droves. The SLICK- CHIBOG match was the night’s high light; though there were a lot of other memorable fights slated that night. One of which was the classic match up between STD’s CATHY and YGK’s TABAS which ended in a draw after both handlers agreed to end the fight after almost two hours though both their dogs were still eager for more.
Hoots and jeers came as one dog came to the pit one after the other while the opponent was being washed. CHIBOG looked mean and hungry, His mouth was muzzled shut in nylon as he was said to bite anything and everything once excited. SLICK for his part looked cool yet ready, eyeing the spectators decisively.
When bets were being called, CHIBOG was the crowd favorite. Doc J and Jack did not seem to mind. Their focus was with the fight.
Again SLICK just went with the motions the first minutes into the fight. CHIBOG drove him all over the pit but he hang on, encouraged by Jack from the corner and Doc J who tried his best to stay in front of his dog. For those who had not seen SLICK fight before, it seemed as if the fight was going CHIBOG’s way as it was SLICK who was down most of the time. But SLICK was busy working from the ground. After the first out of hold count was completed, and SLICK was made to make the first scratch, it was a whole new ball game for the red dog. He swapped hold with CHIBOG, bit deeper and shook harder. CHIBOG was soon pinned on his corner and was only able to get up when SLICK paused for a breather. It was now the turn of the crowd supporting SLICK to go wild.
CHIBOG was not easily curred out. It took more than half an hour before he refused to move an inch from his corner and looked up pained at his handler. It was said that CHIBOG died a little later after the fight.
For SLICK’s championship, Doc J had his sights trained on the JEEP-BOLIO cross, then CH. STD’s JAMUGA. But Captain was perhaps from whom Floyd Weather Jr. got his negotiation training from- as Doc J found it easier to rope sand than to settle on the terms and conditions of the match up with him. Since no agreement was ever reached between parties, Doc J decided to retire SLICK for stud at the age of seven.
Apart from the infamous SLICK-NUKE breeding that produced GR. CH. Loki’s Den’s LOKI, CH BWK’s JEMAAH 3xW 1xL and BWK’s CHAOS 1xW, SLICK was also bred to Mile’s GINGER, a daughter of DSK’s SERBESA 1xW and GNB’s MEILING, to produce RTK’s VENOM 1xW, 1xL. When SLICK was bred to another daughter of ARCE’s LINEAR POR to ARCE’s MICHELLE, J. Espina’s DYNASTY , this breeding produced Nemi’s BRENDA 2xW, 1xGL and another good producer known as Jose and Rodriguez’ KANE 1xW, 1xDGL. KANE had produced CH BWK’s UNGGA, D & D’s MUSHI 2xW, 1xL, D & D’s SHOCKY 2xW, 1xGL and Outlaws’ SHEA 1xW.
To date, the progeny of SLICK continues with his winning granchildren BWK's SNOW 2xW, BWK's KANE ROCK, BWK's CHABIE 1xW, BWK's KIM 2 1XW OTC, and CH.RTK's JUMONG 4xW just to name a few from a long list that might yet get longer.
In closing for the interview conducted to write this article, Doc J wanted to impart that it is not only good dogs that produce winners, but good handlers as well. Of course, the truth of the matter could not be denied.
