CH. DSK's CUJO 3xW, 1xL
In February of 1998, Kit DSK and Erik of Tito and the Local Boys went to JA’s farm so scout for possible prospects. While thereat, Kit saw a rangy, seven month old male pup that kept barking and running around his tie out. When Kit inquired as to how the said pup was bred, he was informed that it was a son of Arce’s LINEAR POR and KSK’s Winky, who was a progeny of GRCH Coy’s BANJO ROM. Kit was told that the aforementioned pup’s littermates went to some of the commendable dogmen of the time like Ted P. of Mandirigma and JE (who got another male which later became known as BWK’s SLICK 2xW POR). There were two pups left to choose from the said litter and Kit was in a dilemma. One was so reserved looked so much like BANJO while the other rangier one still wound stop running around as far as his tie out would allow him. When Kit sought Erik’s opinion, the latter was quick to remind Kit the sport was no beauty contest and so they ended up bringing home the rang one Kit named after a rabid St. Bernard from a Stephen King novel, CUJO.
Kit suffered a motorcycle accident a few months later and while recovering at home a friend came to visit. As he was entertaining his guest in the garden, CUJO, who was then a month past the first year, accidentally got out of his cage and went straight for another dog in the yard, DSK’s DAGGER 2xW. The older dog was able to take the first hold, but CUJO was quick to retaliate with a stronger bite and a fiercer shake that would forever carved in Kit’s memory. Kit and his friend were quick to separate the dogs, in fear that DAGGER might eventually do some something nasty to the yearling. The said incident made Kit decide that CUJO was ready for schooling.
Kit began CUJO’s training by having him run on a leash attached to his bicycle as Kit was still having difficulty walking because of the accident. When CUJO showed potential with his succeeding rolls, Kit opened his weight at 39 pounds and DT hooked CUJO up with VP and his dog BAD BOY.
Nothing went wrong with CUJO’s conditioning and the day of the match itself seemed like a blur for Kit due to the anticipation and excitement. However, CUJO went home with his first win.
CUJO was again opened with the same weight and a match was found with AG of Southernmen and his dog JOHNNY. Both dogs showed up well conditioned during the match day and one hell of a fight ensued with both dogs refusing to give up an inch. In the end of the hard fought match, CUJO was declared a 2xW.
Kit gave CUJO a year to rest and recover. When he finally decided to give CUJO a shot at the championship CH. Underdog’s ATILLA was ready to answer.
On that fateful night of December 20, 2001, it seemed things were not going well for both Kit and CUJO in the initial onset. ATILLA had CUJO by the stifle for twenty minutes and three-fourths of the said time CUJO was wailing in pain. Kit called a turn on his dog and was granted by the referee. When both dogs were released again, CUJO managed an ear hold and, in Kit’s own words, it was cha cha time as both dogs struggled for domination and retaliation. The dance eventually tired ATILLA. When a quick handle was made at the 42 minute mark, CUJO came like a speeding rain from his corner and continued with the punishment. Another quick handle and ATILLA refused to budge between his handler’s legs as he was too exhausted, making CUJO a legitimate champion.
Kit was originally planning to give CUJO an extended R n’ R as the match with ATILLA was indeed a hard one to bag, but VP came up to him with a challenge at 38.5 pounds with a son of GRCH. Underdog’s POGI ROM and Underdog’s DADA fittingly called YELLOW who was 37.5. It took a few days for Kit to decide as he was hesitant of giving up half a pound, but eventually gave it the go signal.
On April 6, 2001, less than four months from his last outing, CH. DSK’s CUJO arrived skinnier than the usual while YELLOW looked better with the single pound gain.
Both dogs came ready for war upon release. No quarter was given and none was asked. But as the fight progressed, CUJO was slowly wearing down. It seemed the damage ATILLA had inflicted on CUJO’s stifle had not completely healed and it was taking its toll- especially because CUJO was up against a dog of top caliber. VP called a turn on CUJO and it was granted. When the thirty-second count was completed, CUJO lost to the better dog that night.
CUJO was brought to Kit’s farm in Tarlac. While there at, CUJO’s intestines had to undergo operation after he swallowed a mango seed. It was then that Kit decided to retire CUJO for good.
Like his other famous brother BWK’s SLICK 2xW POR, CUJO was able to sire notable offspring such as DSK’s OUIJA 2xW, 1xGL and DSK’s TOMBOY 1xW, 1xL.Both dogs, albeit the imperfect record, proved their mettle against some of the best of their time.
